Artist Statement:
Objects in places are proof of human existence. Without witnessing anyone acting in the space, stories can still be formed by looking at the objects in it. In my practice, I create environments to tell stories of imagined characters, which invites a third person (the viewer) to form.
My inspiration for using environmental narratives came from my living experiences in Minnesota and New York. Both places induced loneliness despite the density levels of the cities being drastically different. But looking at the sky in these two places brought comfort because it reminded me I was not the only one living under it. It inspired me to create familiar environments and objects in my paintings so they could be universally relatable and viewers could easily engage to form their unique versions of their stories by looking at the work.
While creating these paintings, I also have my imagined character and story version in mind. Still, I intend to use the canvas as a substitute for the ‘sky’ I mentioned above, where all these different versions of stories from viewers and mine live under, hoping to bring comfort by depicting a common ground.
